This is a Jerusalem cross pendant, also known as a Crusader's Cross or a five-fold cross. It is a variant of a Christian cross that consists of a large central cross with four smaller Greek crosses in each quadrant. The pendant features a prominent green stone in the center. The stone seems to be resin. This cross is marked Bethlehem, Sterling Silver and 800. it measures 2.25 inches x 2.25 inches not including the bale.
Symbolism of the Jerusalem Cross
The design of the Jerusalem cross is rich in symbolism with several common interpretations:
The Five Wounds of Christ: The five crosses are often said to represent the five wounds Jesus received during his crucifixion. The large central cross symbolizes the wound from the spear in his side, while the four smaller crosses represent the wounds on his hands and feet.
Christ and the Evangelists: Another interpretation is that the large cross represents Jesus Christ, and the four smaller crosses symbolize the four Gospel writers: Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John.
The Spread of the Gospel: The cross also symbolizes Christ's command to spread the Gospel to the four corners of the Earth, with the central cross representing Jerusalem as the starting point.
